The U-16 hurling team captured the divisional title last night with a super win over hot favrouites Bandon at Newcestown. Pedlars opened up a six point lead early on before the Lily whites narrowed the margin to one point after fifteen minutes. An opening goal by Padraic Cullinane preceded by points from Ciaran Nyhan, Brian O'Donovan and Cullinane himself made for the ideal start. Pedlars dominated the final ten minutes of the opening half and tacked on six more scores to leave the half time lead at 2-09 to 1-04 with Padraic Cullinane scoring a second major having been set up by a passing movement involving Jack Ryan and Brian O'Donovan. A fantastic point by Ronan McCarthy on the run followed by another great point by Ciaran Nyhan ensured the villagers held sway in general play and on the scoreboard. Cian Ryan made a fantastic reflex save but could do nothing more as he saw the rebound billowed to the back of the net for what would be Bandon's only green flag.
Crucially Pedlars hit the opening score of the second period and it was nip and tuck from there to the finish. Scores from Ciaran Nyhan, Brian O'Donovan and Cullinane in that second period kept the scoreboard ticking, maintaining the half time advantage. The half back line of Cormac McCarthy, captain Sean Crowley and Eoin Nyhan were the launch pad for many of the attacks while the full line of Tristan Walsh, Ciaran O'Neill and Aaron Ferguson didn't put a foot wrong over the hour with goalkeeper Cian Ryan putting in a great display. In the final quarter Danny Murphy scored one of the points of the match when he sprinted seventy meters to split the post for an inspirational score following great work by Brian Dowling and Dave McCarthy. Pedlars brought back most of their team into defense for the final five minutes and worked down the clock to ensure a tremendous victory which had its foundation in a phenomenal team work rate.Captain Sean Crowley received the cup from divisional secretary Aidan O'Rourke after the game. The team now meet Bride Rovers on Saturday 8th August at 4pm in Blarney. Team: Cian Ryan, Tristan Walsh, Aaron Ferguson, Cormac McCarthy, Sean Crowley, Eoin Nyhan, CIaran Nyhan, Ronan McCarthy, Brian O'Donovan, David McCarthy, Brian Dowling, Daniel Murphy, Jack Ryan and Padraic Cullinane. Sub: Ger Cummins. Scores from - Ciaran Nyhan (0-4F, 0-3P), Ronan McCarthy (0-1), Brian O'Donovan (0-3), Danny Murphy (0-1) and Padraic Cullinane (2-2)
