Golden Period of Hurling

West Cork Champions

1989, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2019, 2021, 2022

The latter years of the nineties was certainly the golden period of junior hurling for Ballinascarthy. The big breakthrough came in 1989 when hot favourites and county finalists the previous year; Newcestown, were defeated in the final at Ballineen

The team went on to contest the County Final against Clyda Rovers at Pairc Ui Choimh and suffered a heartbreaking defeat in a replay at Cloughduv when a six-point lead with twelve minutes to go slipped away.

There was a 19 year gap between the success of 2000 and winning the 2019 championship. This victory was all the more sweeter as the Junior A hurlers had tasted defeat in the 2017 final (defeated by Clonakilty) and 2018 final (defeated by Kilmeen).

Interesting  fact in all four years between 1997 and 2000 is that the team which defeated Ballinascarthy became the eventual county champions later that year –, Castlelyons, Bride Rovers Bandon and Nemo Rangers. Bandon defeated Bal in the opening round of the 1999 divisional competition after a replay and went on to defeat Courcey Rovers in the County final later that year.

The path to the divisional final in each year is summarised below together with the county championship results of each year.
