The Late Hugh Holland

It was with great sadness that the community of Ballinascarthy learnt of Hugh Holland’s passing on Tuesday last (21st July). Hugh was a member of a family with a long standing association with the village and the Bal GAA club. He had fought his illness for a relatively short time and news of his passing evoked great sympathy in the locality. His father Ted and uncle Jerry and their families had a long and distinguished association with the club over the years and many a club meeting was held in Holland’s coal shed in the formative years of the club’s existence. Hugh played with the club along with his four brothers and cousins across the road during the sixties and early seventies in both codes with hurling his favoured game. His haulage trailers were a feature of the village landscape and when various teams brought success to the club, Hugh was always on hand to ferry the panel from Pedlars to Ballinascarthy amidst great celebration. The huge crowd that lined the road in the village on Saturday last was a fitting tribute to the popularity Hugh and the Holland family were held. To his wife Julie, sons Stephen, Alan and Hugh, brothers and sisters and extended family we express our deepest sympathy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis
